How often should the water be drained? 

The better maintained your pool, spa, or hot tub is, the less frequently the water needs to be drained. In general, water needs to be drained: 

• Every 12 to 18 months for swimming pools.
• Every 3 to 6 months for spas and hot tubs. 

The reasons for draining the water include: 

• Allowing a thorough inspection for signs of damage to the sides and floor. 
• Allows for thorough cleaning of the pool or spa, removing stains from minerals in the water, flushing the pipes, and thoroughly removing algae spores.

My pool pump stopped working. Can I replace it myself? 

There are many aspects to replacing a pool pump, and not everyone has the time to learn everything there is to know about the job. If you have the original manual from when the pool was installed, you can follow the manufacturer’s instructions. In many cases, that manual is no longer available. In that case, the top considerations for a new pump include: 

Selecting the right pump for the water volume, flow rate, turnover, and resistance. To do this you need to know how to calculate volume, flow, and resistance. 

• There is a formula for calculating volume which means measuring the depth of the water at its deepest and shallowest, calculating the average depth, and then calculating volume based on the shape of the pool. 
• Flow, turnover, and resistance also have their formulas. Flow rate is the number of gallons the pump moves per minute. Turnover is the minimum amount of time that is needed to circulate all of the water through the filter. 
• The equipment like filters, heaters, and automatic pool cleaners that are connected to the circulation and filtration systems create resistance to the water flow. 

The pump needs to be the right size to efficiently handle the volume, flow rate, and resistance. There are also formulas for calculating the appropriate pump for a spa or hot tub.
